Begin by finding a comfortable position. Allow your body to settle into the space you are in right now. Close your eyes gently if that feels safe for you or simply lower your gaze. Take a deep breath in through your nose filling your lungs completely and release it slowly.
Let your breathing return to its natural rhythm. There is no need to force or change the way you breathe. Simply allow your body to breathe exactly as it wants to. You are here to observe and to be present with each inhalation and exhalation.
Bring your full attention to the physical sensation of your breath. Notice where you feel it most clearly. It could be cool air entering your nostrils or the gentle rise of your chest. Perhaps you feel it in your belly.
Wherever the sensation is strongest rest your awareness there. Think of this spot as your anchor. Whenever your mind begins to drift as minds naturally do you can gently return to this physical anchor.
Follow the journey of a single breath. Notice the beginning of the inhale as air enters your body. Notice the brief moment of stillness at the top of the breath. Follow the release to the end and notice the slight pause before the next breath begins.
Thoughts will inevitably enter your mind. You might hear sounds or feel sensations in your body. This is normal. When your attention wanders do not judge yourself. Acknowledge the distraction softly and slowly guide your focus back to the gentle rhythm of your breathing.
Every time you return to the breath you practice mindfulness. You strengthen your ability to stay in the present moment. Breathe in and know you are breathing in. Breathe out and know you are breathing out. Let the breath wash over you like a calm wave.
Notice the temperature of the air. Notice if your breaths are shallow or deep. Just observe with curiosity and acceptance.
If your mind is busy today that is okay. Treat wandering thoughts like clouds drifting across an open sky. You do not need to chase them or push them away. Just let them pass and return your gaze to the breath.
Allow yourself to sink deeper into relaxation with every exhale. Let go of any tension in your shoulders your jaw or your forehead. You are supported. You are safe. You are exactly where you need to be right now.
As we draw this meditation to a close gently expand your awareness outward. Notice the feeling of the surface beneath you.
Take one final deep breath in and sigh it out slowly. When you feel ready softly open your eyes and carry this calm presence with you into your day.
