Welcome to this brief practice of breath awareness. Find a comfortable position. Sit in a chair, on a cushion, or lie down. Whatever allows you to feel relaxed and alert. Gently close your eyes or soften your gaze, resting your attention downward. Take a deep, full breath in through your nose, filling your lungs entirely. And release it slowly through your mouth, letting go of any tension you brought with you today. Let your breathing return to its natural rhythm.

Bring your attention to the physical sensation of your breath. You do not need to change how you are breathing. Simply observe it exactly as it is. Notice where you feel your breath most distinctly. You might feel the cool air entering and leaving your nostrils. You might feel the gentle rise and fall of your chest. Or you might feel the deep expansion and contraction of your belly. Choose one of these areas to be your anchor. This is the place you will return to whenever your mind wanders.

Rest your awareness on your chosen anchor. Feel the beginning of the inhale. Follow the breath as it travels into your body. Notice the brief pause at the top of the breath. Then follow the exhale all the way out to the very end. Experience the entire cycle of a single breath.

Each breath is entirely unique. Notice the temperature of the air. Notice the subtle movements in your shoulders and ribs.

As you sit here, your mind will eventually wander. This is completely natural. It is simply what minds do. You might find yourself planning for the future, remembering the past, or getting caught up in a story. When you notice that your attention has drifted away from your breath, you have experienced a moment of mindfulness. In that moment of waking up, gently and without judgment, guide your attention back to your anchor.

Return to the very next breath.

Breathe in, knowing you are breathing in. Breathe out, knowing you are breathing out. Let every inhale nourish your body. Let every exhale relax you more. If your mind wanders a hundred times, simply bring it back a hundred times.

There is no way to fail at this practice. Every time you return to your breath, you are strengthening your ability to remain anchored in the present moment.

Just feel the rhythm of your body. The steady, reliable wave of your breath.

You are here. You are breathing. You are alive in this exact moment.

As we prepare to end this meditation, take one deep breath in. Fill your body with fresh air.

And let it out with a soft sigh.

Slowly bring your awareness back to your surroundings. Notice the surface beneath you. Hear the sounds around you.

When you feel ready, gently open your eyes. Take this sense of calm and presence with you into your day.
