Welcome to this practice of self-compassion. Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down. Allow your body to settle into this space. Gently close your eyes, or soften your gaze.
Begin by bringing your awareness to your breath. Notice the gentle rise and fall of your chest or abdomen. There's no need to change your breath in any way. Simply observe its natural rhythm.
Inhale deeply through your nose. And exhale slowly through your mouth.
As you continue to breathe, imagine a soft, warm light emanating from within your chest. This light is filled with kindness and understanding. It's a light of self-acceptance.
Now, bring to mind a situation that has recently caused you some difficulty or discomfort. It doesn't have to be a major crisis. Perhaps it's a small mistake you made, or a feeling of inadequacy. Choose something that evokes a gentle feeling of struggle, not overwhelming pain.
As you hold this situation in your awareness, notice any feelings that arise. Are you feeling disappointment? Frustration? Sadness? Acknowledge these feelings without judgment. They are simply human experiences.
Now, imagine directing that warm, gentle light towards yourself. As you inhale, visualize the light expanding, filling your being with warmth. As you exhale, imagine this light softening any harsh self-criticism.
Silently, or in your mind, offer yourself these phrases: May I be kind to myself in this moment.
May I accept myself as I am.
May I offer myself the same understanding I would offer a dear friend.
Notice how these words feel in your body. If they bring up any resistance, that's okay. Just gently return to the intention of kindness.
Remember that struggling and making mistakes are part of the human condition. You are not alone in your imperfections. Everyone experiences moments of difficulty.
Bring your awareness back to your breath. Feel the gentle flow of air. And with each inhale, invite in more kindness. With each exhale, release any lingering self-judgment.
Imagine this warm light of self-compassion spreading throughout your entire body. From the tips of your toes to the crown of your head. It’s a blanket of gentle acceptance.
You are worthy of kindness, always. Especially when you are hurting. Especially when you feel you've fallen short.
Now, gently begin to deepen your breath. Wiggle your fingers and toes. And when you feel ready, slowly open your eyes. Carry this feeling of self-compassion with you into the rest of your day.
