Welcome to this practice of self-compassion. Find a comfortable position for your body. You can be seated, or lying down. Wherever you are, allow your body to settle into a sense of ease.
Gently close your eyes, or soften your gaze. Bring your awareness to your breath. You don't need to change anything about your breath. Simply notice the inhale… and the exhale. Feel the gentle rise and fall of your chest, or your abdomen.
As you continue to breathe, notice any sensations present in your body. Perhaps you feel the support of the chair beneath you, or the soft cushion. Perhaps you notice the temperature of the air on your skin. Just observe, without judgment.
Now, bring to mind something that has been challenging for you recently. It doesn't need to be a huge crisis. It could be a small disappointment, a moment of frustration, or a feeling of inadequacy. Choose something that brings a gentle ache to your heart.
As you hold this challenge in your awareness, notice how your body responds. Do you feel a tightness in your chest? A knot in your stomach? Simply acknowledge these sensations.
Now, imagine offering yourself the same kindness you would offer to a dear friend who was going through something similar. What words of comfort would you speak to them? What tone of voice would you use?
Bring that same gentle tone and supportive intention to yourself now. Silently, or in a soft whisper, repeat these phrases to yourself. You can begin with: "This is a moment of suffering."
And then, acknowledge that suffering is part of the human experience. Say to yourself: "Suffering is a part of life."
And finally, offer yourself kindness. Say to yourself: "May I be kind to myself."
Repeat these phrases, allowing them to resonate within you. "This is a moment of suffering." "Suffering is a part of life." "May I be kind to myself."
Notice the intention behind these words. It’s not about fixing anything. It’s simply about acknowledging your pain and offering yourself a gentle presence. A presence of understanding and acceptance.
Imagine a warm, soothing light flowing from your heart, enveloping you in a blanket of compassion. This light is filled with acceptance, understanding, and love. It washes over any areas of tension or discomfort.
Feel the warmth seeping in, softening the edges of your experience. Allow yourself to feel a sense of gentle ease, just for this moment. You are not alone in your struggles. Everyone experiences challenges.
Bring your awareness back to your breath. Feel the gentle inhale… and the gentle exhale. Allow the warmth of self-compassion to linger.
When you are ready, gently begin to deepen your breath. Wiggle your fingers and toes. And slowly, when it feels right for you, open your eyes. Carry this feeling of kindness with you as you move forward.
